Encaustic

Encaustic is a method originally discovered by the ancient Greeks where oil pigment is mixed with melted beeswax then fused with a hot torch one layer at a time. It can be applied to any porous surface, and any organic collage material encased within the beeswax is rendered completely archival.  As a painter I am fascinated by the wide range of atmospheric effects that are possible with encaustic.  I used  fabric, gold and silver leaf, dried grasses, and paper to tell the story of the crane’s survival, and to describe the ethereal elegance of this tall gray bird.  They are all painted on 1/2” wood sign board measuring 8”x 8” and float 3/4” when hung on a wall.
